Preparing Your Gutters for Cold Weather: A Quick Fall Checklist

Fall brings cooler temperatures, color-changing leaves, and more seasonal upkeep for property owners. Your gutters should be part of that routine.

At Gutter Tech, fall maintenance gives us a chance to catch the kinds of problems that can become more troublesome as leaves pile up, rain moves through, and temperatures drop. Clogs, leaks, slow drainage, and loose gutter sections may seem minor now, but taking care of them early can help keep water moving away from your property and reduce the risk of more costly problems later.

Use this quick checklist to see what we recommend looking for and when it may be time to call in a gutter professional.

Fall Gutter Quick-Check Guide

1. Check for Leaves and Debris

Look for:

  • Leaves or twigs in the gutters
  • Debris around downspouts
  • Standing water
  • Slow drainage

Leaf and debris buildup is one of the first things we look for during fall gutter maintenance. Even a partial clog can slow drainage and leave less room for water to move through the system when heavier rain arrives.

What we recommend:
Clear visible buildup and make sure water can move freely through the gutters and downspouts. If debris is a recurring problem, gutter guards can help reduce the amount entering the system.

2. Check for Leaks and Dripping Seams

Look for:

  • Dripping seams or joints
  • Water marks below the gutters
  • Small holes or cracks
  • Water escaping before it reaches a downspout

When we inspect a gutter system, leaks are one of the problems we don’t recommend ignoring. Even a small leak can allow water to repeatedly reach areas it wasn’t meant to.

What we recommend:
Have leaking sections inspected to determine if they can be repaired or if more extensive damage is present.

3. Check for Sagging or Loose Gutters

Look for:

  • Sections pulling away from the building
  • Gutters that appear uneven
  • Loose connections
  • Water collecting in low spots

Sagging or loose gutters may not seem urgent at first, but they can be a sign that the system isn’t draining the way it should. After more than 10 years of installing, repairing, and maintaining gutters, we know that’s a sign you don’t want to overlook. These issues can place added strain on the gutter system over time.

What we recommend:
Address loose or sagging sections before colder weather arrives. Depending on the condition of the system, repair or replacement may be the better option.

4. Check Where Your Downspouts Send Water

Look for:

  • Water collecting near the foundation
  • Slow or clogged downspouts
  • Soil washing away
  • Runoff pooling around landscaping or walkways

When we check gutters, we don’t stop at the roofline. Downspouts also need to carry water away from the building and release it where it can drain properly.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building Science Education Center explains that poor drainage can lead to excess soil saturation around a building and contribute to moisture problems over time.

What we recommend:
Make sure downspouts are clear and sending water away from the building. If water is still collecting where it shouldn’t, the system may need cleaning, repair, or replacement.

5. Get Ahead of Colder Weather

Look for:

  • Standing water
  • Wet debris
  • Slow drainage
  • Clogs that keep water trapped in the system

Missouri temperatures can change considerably as fall progresses. According to the National Weather Service, the average first freeze during the 1991–2020 climate-normal period occurred on October 23 in Columbia and November 2 in St. Louis, though the actual date varies from year to year.

That’s one reason we recommend dealing with drainage problems before colder weather settles in. Water and wet debris trapped in a poorly draining system can become a bigger concern once temperatures begin to fall.

What we recommend:
Clear clogs, check drainage, and address damaged areas before freezing weather arrives.

6. Look for Signs That Water Isn’t Going Where It Should

Look for:

  • Puddles below the roofline
  • Water running behind the gutter
  • Washed-out soil
  • Overflow during rain
  • Water collecting close to the building

After working with gutter systems, one thing we know is that the problem isn’t always where you first notice the water. Overflow or pooling can point to a clog, drainage problem, damaged section, or another issue elsewhere in the system.

What we recommend:
Pay attention to where water goes during the next rain. If it isn’t flowing through the gutters and away from the property as intended, have the system checked.

What to Do If You Notice a Gutter Problem

Gutter issues aren’t always immediately obvious. Problems can start with something as simple as a clog, leak, loose connection, sagging section, or downspout that isn’t directing water where it should.

If your fall check turns up a problem:

  • Remove visible debris blocking water flow.
  • Watch the system during rain to check drainage.
  • Address leaks or loose sections before they worsen.
  • Have recurring problems inspected if the cause isn’t clear.
  • Consider repair or replacement if the system is damaged.

Gutter Tech can inspect the system and help determine the right next step based on what we find.
